COMMON CURIOSITIES

We challenge the conventions of domestic building. Below are responses to structural, philosophical, and logistical inquiries frequently posed by clients and observers.

Is an open-plan structural grid practical for privacy?

Privacy in our pavilions is dictated by geometry, elevation, and acoustics, rather than swinging wooden doors. By staggering sightlines and using monolithic utility cores as visual blocks, intimacy is preserved without sacrificing volume.

How do you insulate raw concrete structures?

We utilize sandwich-panel concrete construction or structural insulated panels (SIPs) masked by raw exterior surfaces. The thermal mass of the interior concrete is leveraged to regulate temperature swings passively.

Why do you avoid traditional fenestration (windows)?

A standard window punched into a wall is a compromise. We prefer floor-to-ceiling structural glazing or continuous clerestory glass that dissolves the boundary between the interior void and the exterior environment entirely.

What is the cost implication of double-height voids?

While you lose calculable square footage on paper, the psychological value of the volume increases exponentially. Engineering suspended slabs or dramatic cantilevers does carry a premium structural cost, offsetting the savings in drywall framing.

How does Grove Tiny Pavilion handle building permits for unconventional designs?

All our designs, however avant-garde, adhere strictly to local structural and safety codes. We work closely with visionary structural engineers who translate dramatic cantilevers into fully compliant, mathematically verified steel frameworks.

Can existing standard homes be retrofitted to this aesthetic?

Superficial finishes can be altered, but true spatial flow requires structural demolition. To achieve our aesthetic in a retrofit, we typically strip the building down to its studs and foundation, treating the remaining structure as an empty shell.

Do you mandate the interior design and furnishings?

We provide a strict spatial brief. The architecture dictates a minimalist approach to furnishings; over-stuffing the volume with decorative clutter destroys the intended architectural drama. We strongly suggest integrating built-in casework.

What does the design timeline look like?

Conceptualizing structural drama cannot be rushed. The architectural brief and conceptual stages usually require 3-4 months, followed by an intensive period of structural engineering coordination.
